2. Who Is It Best For?

Will the Chicco Fit2 Be a Good Fit For Your Child and Family?

Chicco – the most recent, premium range of car seats with a lot of innovative safety and comfort features and a unique ergonomic design – reminds me of Apple iPhones. There’s always a new model on the market – each one improving on the specs and the features of the last – and it’s always tough to know exactly which one is going to be right for you.

Chicco Fit2 is the entry-level model of the Fit2 series, even though it supersedes the KeyFit 35 in some aspects, like the higher height limit and a 2-stage base. There are two premium siblings – Fit2 Adapt and Fit2 Air. So why should you go for the Fit2 – and is it right for you?

Well, it’s best for parents looking for a model that allows for a few longer rear-facing, thanks to its 35 lbs/ 35″ capacity that is slightly better than the 99 percent of infant car seats.

The Fit2 adds a higher height limit, an easier-to-use handle, 2-stage base than its predecessors in the KeyFit line. Plus, with the essential safety and comfort features retained but cheaper, it has plenty of goodies other two Fit2 series car seats fail to deliver.

Sound like it might be the right fit for you? Read on – I’m breaking down everything you need to know about the Chicco Fit2 and comparing it with other Chicco infant car seats.

3. Value for Money

Is the price tag worth it?

At $319.99, the Chicco Fit2 is very expensive. It’s highly-priced as the Graco 4Ever DLX, which is a 4-in-1 car seat that will last to fit your kid from birth to 8 years or older.

However, compared to other expensive infant car seats from Doona, Britax, Nuna, or even the same brand – Chicco, you won’t feel it’s too expensive, considering its higher 35-inch height limit and innovative 2-stage base for extended rear-facing.

Compared to the Chicco Fit2 Air, it is $40 cheaper. The Fit2 Air only improves on the fabric that is made of 3D air mesh for better comfort in all weather conditions. However, the Fit2 is also made of high-quality to provide necessary coziness.

Aside from this difference, both Chicco infant car seats have almost all of the same features. You can think about the Fit2 Air as a souped-up Fit2. If you’re in the market for a relatively cost-effective car seat and want a model that is reliable and still packs a lot of practicalities, then you’re going to be very happy with the Fit2.

To paint a broader picture of value for money, in our database of 20+ infant car seats, no model rivals the Chicco Fit2 for height limit (35″).

With every manufacturer may have developed its own techniques in the car seat industry, it’s a bit different to compare the specific features. Digging deeper into the overall performance, you’ll know the reason why some parents choose Chicco Fit2 over its competitors.

Dimensions and Width

The Chicco Fit2 has dimensions of 17 inches in width, 24 inches in height, and 28 inches in depth.

It’s a little larger in size (mainly the depth) compared to some other infant car seats, which can affect how well it will fit in certain vehicles.

However, despite its size, it can fit in a large number of mid-size and larger vehicles, but families with particularly small cars may have difficulty fitting the car seat into their vehicle, particularly in smaller back seats.

The width is quite average among the infant car seats, narrow enough to fit three across in most vehicles for multi-car-seats situations. The depth (or length) is probably the main reason that parents feel it’s bulky.

It’s slightly longer than other infant car seats, but not much. However, this still means it needs to borrow more room from the front seat, making it less fitting in small cars.

It’s always a good idea to measure their vehicle’s back seat area to ensure that the Chicco Fit2 will fit properly.

Portability

The Chicco Fit2 car seat carrier weighs around 11 pounds, which is a bit heavier than most infant car seats – typically around 10 pounds.

While it’s not exactly lightweight, it’s not excessively heavy either, making it relatively easy for most parents to carry or move around.

If you just need to take it from the car and attach it to a compatible stroller, or carry it from the garage to the living room, it’s not a biggie, because the weight gap between 11 pounds and 8-10 pounds can be disregarded if with a 20-pound infant sitting in it.

But it’s true that the 11-pound weight is double of the lightest infant car seats between 5-6 pounds. It’s even heavier than some lightweight convertible car seats around 9.5 pounds, like Evenflo Tribute.

Due to its weight and size, it’s not the most portable infant car seat available on the market. Although it can be moved from one car to another, it can be difficult to transport the Chicco Fit2 on long trips or flights.

That being said, it comes with a carry handle at the top of the car seat, which makes it easy to move it from the car to the house or another location. Its design allows for the car seat to be latched into the base, so it can be quickly clicked in and out of the car, perfect for when you have multiple vehicles.

Although it’s not the most portable, it’s still relatively easy to move the car seat around, and it’s ideal for parents who travel less frequently.

Canopy

The Chicco Fit2 has a canopy that provides shade and protects your child from the sun’s harmful rays.  It is designed to be easy to adjust with just one hand, and it’s tested to ensure that it can withstand wind without flopping around or impeding the infant’s view.

The canopy size is very standard and average, it delivers a good coverage to protect your baby’s head and face or part of the body, but not 100%. If you prefer a full coverage, the KeyFit 35 Zip ClearTex would be a good option. It comes equipped with an all-weather boot. Also, the Nuna Pipa, which has the well-known Sky Drape, would be also alternative.

The canopy’s fabric is the main advantage, as it provides both a shade and ventilation, making it comfortable for the infant. At the same time, the plastic hinges on the canopy may wear out with time, which can be frustrating for parents as it can make the canopy challenging to use after some time.

Overall, the Fit2’s canopy does provide a relatively good amount of coverage and is made of high-quality materials. However, it could be improved with added convenience features such as an extra sun visor or extended shade. The canopy is also susceptible to wear and tear, so it is essential to ensure that it’s well maintained over time.

Handle

The handle of an infant car seat is an essential component that enables parents to easily transport their infant with the car seat carrier. Here are some key points about the Chicco Fit2’s handle:

Design:

The Chicco Fit2 handle is designed to be ergonomically friendly while carrying the car seat carrier.

The handle uses an over-molded design, which provides a comfortable and secure grip.

The handle has two modes: a carry handle and a stationary handle. The carry handle makes it easy to transport the car seat carrier from one location to another, while the stationary handle provides additional grip while adjusting the car seat carrier in or out of a vehicle.

Material:

The Chicco Fit2 handle is made of durable, high-quality plastic that can withstand wear and tear over an extended period.

The over-molded design of the handle provides a shock-absorbent cushion to ensure added protection while carrying the car seat carrier.

Ease of Use:

The Chicco Fit2 handle is easy to use with one hand, preventing parents from struggling while holding their infant with the other hand.

The handle can be adjusted easily from a carry handle to a stationary handle with a button on top of the carrier.

Parents can quickly adjust the handle to the desired position for easy transportation or installation.

Overall, the Chicco Fit2 handle is designed with the parent needs in mind. The over-molded design and ergonomic shape of the handle ensure a comfortable grip, while the two modes of the handle provide flexibility depending on the need. The handle is made from durable materials that can withstand the wear and tear of everyday use. Additionally, with its easy-to-use design, parents can quickly adjust the handle with one hand, making it a convenient option for parents on-the-go.

Stroller compatibility

The Chicco Fit2 car seat is compatible with several Chicco strollers, making it a versatile option for families who want to use their infant car seat as part of a travel system. Here is a list of strollers that are compatible with the Fit2 infant car seat:

  • Chicco Viaro Stroller
  • Chicco Bravo Stroller
  • Chicco Bravo LE Stroller
  • Chicco Bravo ClearTex Stroller
  • Chicco Bravo Primo Stroller
  • Chicco Bravo Primo Air Stroller
  • Chicco Corso Stroller
  • Chicco Corso LE Stroller
  • Chicco Corso ClearTex Stroller

With these strollers, parents can attach the Chicco Fit2 infant car seat directly to the stroller frame using the included adaptors, creating a streamlined travel system. The car seat snaps into the stroller frame quickly and easily, providing a safe and secure system for parents to move their infant from car to stroller.

It’s important to note that not all Chicco strollers are compatible with the Chicco Fit2 infant car seat. However, the Chicco brand has a good selection of compatible strollers to choose from, ensuring that parents can find the perfect stroller to suit their needs. Additionally, always consult the manufacturer’s website for the most up-to-date information on compatible strollers, as not all models may be compatible with the latest version of the Chicco Fit2 car seat.

Color option

Here’s a list of colors available for the Chicco Fit2 infant car seat:

Cienna (tan and black)

Staccato (black and gray)

Venture (black and green)

There are no specific color options designated for boys or girls. Instead, the choice of color is down to personal preference, and parents should choose the color that they like best for their child.

Ultimately, the most important aspects of an infant car seat are its safety features, comfort, and ease of use for parents. While color choice can be important for some parents, it should not be the only factor taken into consideration when selecting an infant car seat.

Bright-colored car seats are available, such as pink or purple, but not for Chicco Fit2.

Headrest - 7 positions

The Chicco Fit2’s headrest and harness work together to ensure the child’s safety and comfort by providing proper positioning, ease of use, and flexibility.

Firstly, it has an adjustable and removable headrest, which provides multiple positions to accommodate different head sizes and supports the child’s head and neck correctly. The headrest is adjustable with one hand, and it can be moved to six different positions to keep the child comfortable and safe at all times.

Secondly, it comes equipped with a five-point harness that’s easy to adjust and fits the child snugly. The harness has two positions for the crotch strap, which can be adjusted to keep the child securely in place. The harness also adjusts at the front with one hand, making it easy for parents to secure their child with minimal hassle.

The headrest and harness work together to provide a comfortable and secure fit for the child while ensuring optimal crash protection. The harness also features chest clip and shoulder padding that appropriately position the harness, distributing forces to the strongest part of the child’s body, which is the shoulder, and preventing the straps from twisting or coming loose. It’s also simple to customize and adjust the harness to ensure proper and comfortable placement around the child as they grow.

Reclines - 6 Positions

Adjusting the recline position lies in the base. The Chicco Fit2 car seat base provides a 6-position reclining system for exceptional comfort and safety for your little one.

Firstly, the 6-position recline ensures a customized fit for your child, with the ability to adjust to different angles to accommodate their sleeping, resting, or playing postures. This means that the baby can comfortably ride in the car for extended periods without getting cranky or restless.

Secondly, the adjustable recline helps to enhance safety by ensuring that the baby’s head remains firmly in place, reducing the risk of their head bobbing forward or downward during a sudden stop or impact. This way, the baby is better protected from potential injuries, particularly to their delicate neck and spinal area.

Thirdly, the reclining feature helps to prevent reflux in babies who may have digestive issues, particularly during long car rides. The proper recline angle can improve their comfort and ease their symptoms while in transit.

Aside from the recline position, the Chicco Fit2 car seat base also offers simple and easy installation. It features a clear and concise car seat installation guide, which makes the whole installation process smooth and stress-free for the parents.

The 6-position recline beats a lot of convertible and all-in-one car seats, at least as good as the Graco car seats, including the 4Ever DLX, which allows reclining at 6 positions for three stages and modes. The Chicco Fit2 is just an infant car seat for the first stage.

Head and body support

The Chicco Fit2 car seat also comes with excellent head and body support for growing babies. The infant insert included with the car seat provides additional support and comfort for newborns and smaller babies between 4-11 pounds.

The inserts support the baby’s back and head, providing a secure fit and reducing the risk of slumping or wobbling during transit. This feature is particularly important for newborns, who require extra support to keep their heads and neck safely positioned.

As the baby grows, the Chicco Fit2 car seat allows for easy adjustment of the headrest and harness to keep your child comfortable and secure. The headrest provides extra cushioning for the baby’s head and neck, while the adjustable harness ensures a snug fit throughout each stage of development.

Additionally, the car seat’s fabric is soft and breathable, keeping your baby comfortable in all weather conditions. The fabric is removable and machine-washable, making it easy to clean and maintain.

Padding

The Chicco Fit2 car seat is designed to provide exceptional comfort for the child with its innovative padding and carefully designed construction materials.

The car seat features soft, premium-quality padding that’s thick enough to provide excellent cushioning but not too thick to compromise safety. The padding is composed of energy-absorbing foam, which helps to absorb energy in case of an impact, minimizing the shock and impact the child experiences.

Apart from the foam padding, the car seat features a two-stage base with a built-in ReclineSure Leveling System and RideRight bubble levels, ensuring a perfect fit in most vehicles. The base also includes a central stabilizing bar that adds stability to the child’s seat, thus enhancing transit safety.

Additionally, the Chicco Fit2 infant car seat is constructed using high-quality materials that provide durability, reliability, and comfort. The outer shell of the car seat is made from a hard, durable plastic that provides an extra layer of protection to the child in case of a collision.

The construction materials and thick padding of the Chicco Fit2 infant car seat work together to provide optimal comfort and safety for the child. The energy-absorbing foam padding and sturdy outer shell cushions the child and absorb energy during an impact, while the high-quality construction materials ensure that the car seat can withstand extensive use without compromising safety.

5. Crash Tests and Safety Ratings

Is it safe to use Chicco Fit2?

Yes, the Chicco Fit2 car seat is safe to use for newborns and infants following the instructions provided in the manual. It has passed rigorous safety tests and meets or exceeds all safety standards set by the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) and Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) guidelines.

This infant car seat is specifically designed for newborns and infants, and the car seat’s materials and features ensure optimal safety for the child. For example, the car seat includes a secure five-point harness, which helps to reduce the risk of injury to the baby in the case of an accident.

Moreover, the Fit2 has excellent side-impact protection thanks to its dual-stage foam, making the car seat extra-safe in possible side-impact collisions.

Finally, the Chicco Fit2 car seat comes with a removable newborn positioner to keep newborns and younger infants’ heads and necks stable and secure, which is helpful for overall safety until infants get stronger head control.

When using the Fit2, parents should follow the installation and usage in the manual carefully. Parents should also regularly check if the car seat functions effectively by inspecting for any wear and tear, mainly signs of damage to the car seat’s straps or buckles.

Side Impact Protection

The Chicco Fit2 car seat has a dual-stage foam lining that provides superior side-impact protection, making it one of the safest infant car seats for side-impact collisions.

The Chicco Fit2 features a two-stage base with a built-in ReclineSure Leveling System and RideRight bubble levels, ensuring a perfect fit in most vehicles. The car seat’s base has a central stabilizing bar that adds stability to the child’s seat, enhancing transit safety.

Plus, the Fit2 comes with an adjustable and detachable headrest that features Energy-absorbing foam, which provides additional protection to the child’s head in case of side-impact and collision.

Side-impact collisions can be one of the most serious accident types, and this can lead to severe head and neck injuries in children.

Anti-rebound bar

The Chicco Fit2 car seat has an anti-rebound bar, which helps to prevent rebound motion in case of a severe collision that could occur as a result of a sudden impact on the vehicle.

An anti-rebound bar is a safety feature found in some infant car seats and is designed to prevent a rear-facing car seat from bouncing back during a collision or sudden stop. The anti-rebound bar connects to the car seat’s base and distributes the crash force over a larger area, reducing the risk of injury to the child.

The inclusion of an anti-rebound bar adds another layer of safety to the Chicco Fit2 car seat, making it an excellent car seat choice for parents.

6. Performance

Weight and Height Limits

Like most infant car seats, the Chicco Fit2 is able to accommodate infants from 4 to 35 pounds; different from others, it has a top 35 inches height limit, which is 3 inches higher than most models.

The Fit2 car seat is built with the aim of providing an expanded fit for children, meaning that children can stay in the car seat for longer than with standard infant car seats. This feature is possible with the comfort and security provided by the headrest and foot enclosure slots.

The weight limit of 35 pounds and the maximum height of 35 inches places the Fit2 car seat on the higher end of infant car seats in regards to weight capacity, making it a good infant car seat for tall babies. With this maximum capacity, parents can keep their babies in the Chicco Fit2 for up to approximately 2 years, which is ideal if they prefer to keep the child’s newborn head and neck better supported.

The Fit2 and its siblings are the only infant car seats boasting 2-year rear-facing.

However, the real situation might be a bit different than expected, especially if your baby grows at a faster pace than their peers. They probably outgrow the 35-pound weight limit or 35-inch height limit before 2 years old. At this time, if you still prefer an extendable rear-facing, the car seats with a 50-lb rear-facing weight limit would be a good option.

You should always check the weight and height limits of infant car seats before making a purchase, as exceeding the weight or height limits can be dangerous and leads to infants outgrowing the car seat potentially before they are ready for a rear-facing or front-facing child seat.

Also, you should know that car seats have expiration dates, as after exposure to the sun, heat, and other elements over time, plastic materials can become brittle and affect how the car seat responds in an accident scenario. The Chicco Fit2 has an expiry of generally six years, ensuring the car seat remains safe and reliable for your child as they grow up.

Stage / Modes -1st

The Chicco Fit2 car seat is considered a rear-facing infant-only car seat, which is the first stage for newborns and young infants. This means that it is only suitable for infants up to approximately 18 months or 2 years of age (for its higher 35″ height limit) and is intended to be placed in the backseat and facing the rear of the vehicle.

Furthermore, one of the distinctive features of the Chicco Fit2 is that it accommodates babies longer than other standard infant car seats, as it enables babies to remain in a rear-facing position until 2 years old or when they reach the maximum height and weight limit of 35 pounds and 35 inches.

The base and adjustable headrest in the Fit2 uses its “stage 2” features to keep up with the demands of growing infants.

However, despite the long lifespan the car seat offers, babies must remain in a rear-facing car seat until they are 2 years of age or until exceeding the maximum weight and height limits for the car seat.

After this time frame, parents should transition their child to a front-facing car seat that is either convertible or designed solely for front-facing use.

Age Range

While there is no specific age limit for a baby to use the Chicco Fit2, the weight and height limits of the car seat are imperative to follow to ensure optimal safety for the infant.

In general, the infant car seat is suitable for babies from birth up to around 12-18 months old. The weight limit of the car seat is 4-35 pounds, which means that the car seat is ideal for babies who are relatively small and light.

It is important to note that most babies reach 35 pounds around two years of age, but this does not mean they should continue to be in the infant car seat. Once the infant’s head is less than an inch from the top of the car seat and they reach the height limit, it is deemed they have outgrown the infant car seat.

The height limit of the Chicco Fit2 is 35 inches, which ensures that the car seat can accommodate the average infant’s height until they reach around two years old, which is approximately when infants tend to hit that height range. However, it is crucial to see whether the infant’s head still is not nearer than an inch from the top of the car seat or not.

You should also consider how long your baby is likely to remain within the infant car seat. Many children will outgrow the car seat’s height and weight limits before they reach the two-year mark.

You should remain mindful of this and plan accordingly for purchasing a new car seat which may be a convertible or front-facing car seat that can carry them from 2 years through preschool years.

Airplane

Is Chicco Fit2 approved for use on a plane?

Yes, the Chicco Fit2 car seat is FAA approved for use on airplanes. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has specific guidelines and regulations for using child restraint systems on airplanes to ensure the safety of young children during air travel.

This car seat can offer additional protection for infants while traveling in the aircraft, as they provide the same protection for children as when used within a vehicle.

It is crucial to note that certain FAA regulations and procedures dictate where and how the Fit2 can be installed on an aircraft. Parents should check their airline’s regulations before traveling with it to make sure they comply with all FAA regulations and follow airline instructions.

Lifespan

How long is Chicco Fit2 car seat good for

The Chicco Fit2 has a six-year lifespan since the date of manufacture (DOM). However, the real usable time is definitely shorter than the given expiry date.

Over time, plastic materials used to manufacture the Chicco Fit2 car seat may become brittle, which directly affects the car seat’s overall performance in case of an accident.

Manufacturers often provide a “Do not use after Date” for infant car seats and other car seats, generally between six to ten years from the manufacturing date.

Besides, the usability length of an individual Chicco Fit2 notably depends on how long a child can fit in the seat. The Fit2’s max weights or heights can significantly restrict the overall duration a child can safely use the car seat.

After the car seat reaches its expiry date, there are a few methods to dispose of it, store and wait for the next Target car seat trade-in events, or donate it to a CPST for demonstration.

The warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship under normal use and maintenance. This means that if the car seat experiences any problems due to manufacturing defects, Chicco will provide a replacement or repair for the car seat free of charge.

To take advantage of the warranty, customers must register their product with Chicco within 90 days of purchase. Customers must also provide proof of purchase, including the date of purchase and the name of the retailer.

7. Chicco Fit2 Installation

Before starting to install the car seat, you may where to put it. The center of the back seat is probably the safest position to install a car seat.

If possible, install the car seat on that spot. If that seat is not applicable for a proper installation, for example lacking a shoulder belt, either seat on the side would be safe. You may choose any of them based on your family’s and kid’s needs.

Chicco Fit2 Base installation
